Baden-Powell and St.Peter's Junior School

27 Information in this prospectus was correct at the time of its update in March 2020. We advise that parents check the school website www.bpspjunior.co.uk for further detailed information. Hair • Long hair (below shoulder length) must be tied back with a simple plain hair band at all times. The hair band should be red, black or white. • Beads and other ‘hard adornments’ including large bows should not be worn in a child’s hair for safety reasons. • Please avoid ‘extreme hairstyles’. We trust that parents will understand our desire for the children at Baden-Powell and St Peter’s to be smart and appropriately dressed and that this information clarifies any uncertainties. We also hope that parents will appreciate our need to ensure that children are able to move around the school and participate in lessons in a healthy and safe manner. If a child comes to school in contravention of these ‘guidelines’ we will make contact with the parents and arrange a meeting in order that we may reach an understanding. Important uniform guidelines • We expect children to arrive at school in a clean white shirt or polo shirt. Polo shirts are acceptable during the summer term, although it is often too cold to wear them without a jumper until June. If an ordinary shirt continues to be worn, a tie must also be worn. • When children are wearing the polo top it should be tucked in and with only the one top button open. • In line with fundamental principles of our uniform policy, children should not wear ‘designer’ sweat tops, hoodies or T-shirts as ‘coats’. If the weather requires a coat then a coat should be worn; if the weather requires a jumper then a school jumper should be worn. • In the interest of health and safety, it is essential that children wear shoes with flattish soles and heels. As a general guideline, any shoe with a heel that is more than 4 centimetres is too high. • The acceptable length of a girl’s skirt, as a sensible guide, should be no shorter than 5 centimetres above the knee. This can only be a guide because much will depend upon the height of the girl. We will contact you if we believe your daughter is wearing a skirt that is too short. • The girls’ summer dress is very popular and can be worn from the start of the summer term. A jumper or cardigan can be worn with this dress if the weather is cold in the morning. • Girls’ trousers should be of the simple tailored variety. Wide flares hanging over the shoes should not be worn to school; they are unsuitable in the school environment and can be dangerous. Hipster and bootleg trousers are also unacceptable. • Training shoes can be brought to school but can only be worn at lunchtime to play soccer. ‘Proper’ shoes must be worn at all other times including on the way to school and when going home. • Make up should not be worn in school. • Children are encouraged to wear a sun hat during the hot summer months. Jewellery With the exception of small, plain studs and wristwatches, jewellery should not be worn in school. For reasons of safety, wherever possible earrings should not be worn in school. If unavoidable, only one pair of close fitting, plain stud earrings should be worn. During PE and games lessons, children wearing earrings will be required to cover them with micropore tape to avoid them becoming caught if they are unable to remove them due to a recent piercing.. We cannot provide tape from our First Aid box, so parents must, therefore, provide the necessary tape for their child each time that they do PE or Games. • When considering having your child’s ears pierced, as six weeks is required for the piercing to heal, it is encouraged that this should be done during the school summer holiday. • All other forms of body piercing jewellery are banned on the grounds of health and safety. • Children may wear inexpensive watches in school but other forms of jewellery are unnecessary and potentially hazardous. Smart watches such as Apple watches cannot be worn as we cannot be held responsible for the security of these items. • If watches are worn they should always be left in a safe place during PE and games lessons.
