Lilliput Infant School

29 Staff The school will ensure that staff, teaching and non-teaching, are fully aware of the sun protection guidelines: • Avoid exposure to the sun during the period between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. • Take care not to burn. • Cover up and wear a hat and sun cream. Staff should, whilst on official duties, follow the protection guidelines, and should act as good role models. Parents Where appropriate, parents/guardians will be provided with information on skin care and preventive strategies, to ensure that their children are equipped for protection from the sun. Parents may apply sunscreens before the start of the day, particularly if children are going on an out of school visit on a hot day or taking part in sports days. Uniform In reviews of the School’s uniform and clothing guidelines, consideration will be given to sun protection issues. Shade Children will be encouraged to play in the shade whenever possible. Outdoor Activities Where possible, P.E. lessons and other outdoor activities will be timetabled so as to avoid exposure during the middle of the day. Where this is not possible, particular attention will be paid to the use of appropriate clothing. Parents will be asked to support these measures. First Aid In the event that a child is sunburnt, the staff will: • Move the casualty into the shade – preferably indoors. • Cool the skin by sponging with tepid water. • Give frequent sips of cold water. • Seek medical advice if there is blistering, dizziness or vomiting. • Call parents.
