Chris Wood, writer & historian for The River Book and Mudeford Ferry Skipper Born in Tuckton, Chris was soon working on the river as a boat boy crewing on the United Ferries before starting his driving career in 1960 with The Funnel Boats, later skippering the passenger boats that sailed from Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers. HOWTHETIDESWORK The tides are causedby the combinedeffectof themoon and the sun’s gravitationalpullon theworldsoceans.When the sun andmoon lineup (such as when there is a fullornewmoon) the tides are larger, and known as SPRING tides. When theywork againsteachother atdifferent timesof themonth, the tides are smaller NEAP tides.On the charts above, thepeak SPRING tides aremarkedup in RED , and themostmoderate NEAP tides in BLUE . Christchurchhas a fairly small tidal range, generally six feet at sea and four feet at ChristchurchQuay. Figures to the rightof the tide timehaveno relation towater depth at any location.But they indicate the rangeof the tide, fromhigh to low. Water levels in theharbour and rivers are also affectedby recent rainfallwhich raises the river levels, and atmosphericpressurewhichpushesorpullson the surfaceof the sea. Forexample, the lowest tides in theChristchurch rivers are in the summer,when theweather is good, the rainfall is low, and thepressure ishigh. In thewinter, prolongedheavy rain can raise the levelsof the Stour andAvonby two feetor more.Combinedwith lowpressure in awinter storm ‘lifting’ the sea, veryhigh water levels canoccur, such as theValentinesDay stormfloodon February 14th 2014,oneof thehighestwater levels in livingmemory.
