Protection comes in various forms and styles: from streamlined safety spectacles to large safety goggles, built to be worn with a face shield or respirator mask. When selecting safety eyewear, it’s worth considering the four main hazard categories to ensure the product you pick provides the protection you need. The first major hazard is agricultural: branches, projectile chipping, contaminated soil and pond water can cause an array of issues. The close fit also reduces the risk of catching the glasses on foliage and branches. The second major hazard is chemical: where fumes, gases and liquid splash are common threats in factories and laboratory environments. Chemical burns are often painful and can cause corneal perforation, ulcers, cataracts and glaucoma to name a few. Household chemicals also pose a threat, with alkaline based substances causing more damage than acid based cleaners and products, due to the rapid absorption rate. Large goggles and face shields are the recommended kit for chemical substance and bi-product handling, as design nature means a larger surface area is covered. Goggles and shields with a strong chemical resistance are preferable. Mechanical hazards are the most common threat and face anyone who works in the construction, engineering or utilities industries. Dust, flying debris and molten metal splash are most often the cause of mechanical work related eye injuries, as items with sharp edges or high kinetic energy are projected towards the eye on a regular basis.
